After the release of Pokemon X & Y, many Pokemon fans grew exited for remakes of Generation III’s Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. Even without any official word from Nintendo, some trainers have found comfort in the rumors and speculation.
One of the reasons fans expect Gen III remakes is that it would fit a pattern: A little over 10 years have passed since the release of Ruby & Sapphire (anyone starting to feel old yet?), which was about the same amount of time between Gold & Silver and their remakes (because I am). This made sense; children who grew up playing the Generation II games in high school had their own money to buy the remakes when they came out. So the Gen III remakes would make a proportional amount of business were Nintendo to release the Hoenn remakes in the near future.
Besides that, fans are finding “evidence” for the remakes in the many in-game Hoenn references in X & Y. An old couple staying in a room at Hotel Richissime tells you about their upcoming ruby and sapphire wedding anniversaries, after mentioning that their first date was at the Oceanic Museum in Slateport City. An old lady in the Coumarine City hotel says, “Where I come from, we have a hot spring right next to the Pokemon Center, and it’s incredible,” referencing Lavaridge Town in Hoenn. The references are so obvious, Nintendo clearly meant for us to notice them. This is reminiscent of Diamond and Pearl, where many in-game references to the Johto region were made. This actually foreshadowed that regions’ remakes in that case, and many fans see this as evidence that the Hoenn remakes might actually be in the works.
The strongest piece of in-game evidence comes from a camper staying in the Geosenge Town hotel. He says, “The Kalos region is nice and all, but you should really check out my region! There’s this facility you wouldn’t believe… Ah, never mind. You’ll see it soon enough.” “Facility” is a term commonly used to refer to buildings in the Battle Frontier. The Frontier hasn’t been present in any games since Generation IV, so the man is either from Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh.
If we do see the Battle Frontier again soon, it would mean one of four things:
1) A Sinnoh or Johto remake (It’s too early for Gen IV)
2) It’ll come as DLC (Something they said they’d never do for a Pokemon game)
3) It’s coming in Pokemon Z (A distinct possibility)
4) We’re getting Hoenn Remakes (My guess)
Of course, all the in-game hints could mean nothing more than the writers wanted to have some fun with us. But a lot of people, including me, think the remakes will be made someday soon for the 3DS. The Hoenn games were the bestselling titles on the GBA, so it would make sense for Nintendo to cash in on all that nostalgia, especially considering their current economic shape.
I’m personally very curious to see how they will take Hoenn from 2D to 3D. Hoenn was the wildest of all the regions, with most towns only having dirt paths to set them apart from routes, if even that. I think Nintendo could make the region look beautiful if they made it in the style of X & Y. The games will be worth the price just to see the cataclysmic battle between the weather trio in stereoscopic 3D.
I loved Generation III, and I know if the remakes ever happen, Ruby is a game I’ll be getting day one.
