I started up Rune Factory 4 on 3DS this week and decided to play through it as a female character. This is something I do quite often, but for the first time I actually got weirded out by it. In fact, after a few hours I had to restart the whole thing to play as a boy.
There are a couple of possible reasons for this:
1) I didn’t like how the girl was portrayed.
They made her very saccharine, and I like tougher, more assertive females. In most games this isn’t a problem, since the character rarely speaks without you putting words in their mouth, freeing me to imagine them as badass as I want. But in Rune Factory’s defense, the boy is equally goody-goody.
2) I wanted the social interactions to matter more.
Like Harvest Moon 3D you can have your character make friends and find love. This is likely more enjoyable if I can put myself fully into the character’s shoe’s and develop relationships accordingly. In other words, it’s hard for me to pick a guy I would want to marry!
So what drives your decision? Does the type of game matter? Answer the poll and share the details of your choice in the comments!
